Description of Research in Relation to Placemaking :

Progress in the field of large-scale data acquisition as well as cost reductions have allowed many cities to have their “digital twin”. Data completed today with 3D models are used by decision-maker in many fields ranging for example from urban planning to the simulation of physical phenomena (noise propagation, flood simulation …). Innovative new tools can also be designed with these data.

New mediations processes in public spaces can also be co-constructed to unroll stakeholders, researchers from various disciplines and citizens in discussion on evolution of a given area. Our Research lab, LIRIS, UMR CNRS 5205 (https://liris.cnrs.fr/en) is composed of 330 researchers specialized in data processing. We are also involved in a French Cluster in Lyon named Intelligence of Urban World (https://imu.universite-lyon.fr/qui-sommes-nous/projet/) where multidisciplinary research programmes based on numerous disciplines are proposed. In LIRIS laboratory, our team Vcity (https://projet.liris.cnrs.fr/vcity) is working in a pluridisciplinary approach with city makers to conceive a better living city. We are naturally involved in placemaking with stakeholders as for instance in the TIGA project (https://projet.liris.cnrs.fr/vcity/partnerprojects/tiga/ ), to work on the link on Citizen and Industry in Lyon and Saint Etienne territories and DatAgora project (https://github.com/VCityTeam/DatAgora/wiki ), to understand the place of date in city construction.

Interest in Contribution Field/Context:

During the last ten years, we have been involved in numerous projects linking Human sciences and computer science. In this way, we can bring an important expertise in the process of co-construction of digital devices with a use-case driven approach. Some of our previous realization may also be provided as use cases to study for this COST. Our expertise on data and especially in 3D may also be interesting.

Case Studies Conducted / Participated In:

Our work on the DatAgora project with the Great Lyon seems to be a good example. With an hybrid device composed of a mockup constructed in lego and data projection, we have constructed a device to promote the discussion on how provide more vegetation in the Part Dieu district in Lyon.

Modes of Investigation:

In the large part of our project an innovation sprint with stakeholders is proposed as a first step. A Minimum Viable Product (proof of concept) is constructed and presented in an iterative way after short sprints of two or 4 weeks. The proposed device can be constructed with or without digital information, and can be hybridized with tangible information (for instance a printed mock-up and numerical information)
